Gen Y - Not So Different from Other Generations

We recently surveyed over 3,000 Gen Y, Gen X and Boomers on Careers and Recruiting. What we found is that there are just as many similarities as there are differences.
As a Gen Yer (college student or recent grad), here are some things to keep in mind as you enter the working world and begin work with other generations. Being mindful of generational differences - it can help you avoid “putting your foot in your mouth” or coming across like a complete alien to your Boomer boss.
1. All generations want interesting work (70%+)
2. All generations said the mission of a company is very important to them (40%+)
3. All generations have expectations that they will move up in their jobs in small steps - most probably due to the economic situation we are in (50%+)
4. All generations want to get their job done, leave work and pursue other interests in their life (50%+)
5. All generations want to learn more on the job (60%+)
Some differences to be aware of as you navigate the corporate landscape:
1. Gen Y wants more frequent feedback on their performance than Gen X or Boomers
Don’t demand monthly reviews from your Boomer manager who is accustomed to annual reviews. Find a compromise.
2. Gen Y and Gen X have a greater desire to move up in their organizations than Boomers
Find a way to broach the subject of professional growth without alienating others around you.
3. Gen Y and Gen X value job security more than Boomers
Demonstrate your worth every day and you won’t have to worry about job security.
4. Gen Y is less likely to stay as long with a company than Gen X or Boomers
Don’t talk about job hopping openly. If it gets back to your manager, you could be in trouble.
5. Gen Y prefers traditional corporate communications, but is more open to “generational speak” than Gen X and Boomers
Be sensitive to cultural norms while expressing your personality.
Use these findings to find common ground with your co-workers and you will be on your way!
