Job Tip from Qualcomm: Be prepared to defend your resume

Katy, a campus recruiter at Qualcomm, one of the largest digital wireless technologies companies in the world, shared this job tip for students and recent grads. “Be prepared to defend anything on your resume. Do not put it on there if you are not 100% confident in discussing it.” That means employers expect that whatever you do have on your resume is fair game. After all you decided to put it there.

Consider doing this once you’ve put the finishing touches on your resume - walk your friend, family member or even your dog through it, item by item, and make sure you have something positive to say about each. Any bullet that makes you hem or haw deserves a second look or probably should come off. A resume is list of your accomplishments and you should be proud of everything on it. Thanks for the great tip Katy!

Has anyone ever had this happen to them, had something on their resume that didn’t quite work. What other resume questions or experiences have you had? Please share!

Also, Qualcomm is always looking for engineers, check out their careers site.

Having spent the past decade helping college students and recent grads find jobs, Experience is putting our expertise to the test as we help 2 lucky graduates find a job in 60 days or less. On average, it takes 3-6 months for recent grads to find work and in this financial climate it could take even longer.

The Offer
We are offering to do whatever it takes to make you successful. We will provide you with FREE coaching services, based on our extensive experience working directly with employers.

We will work with you to develop a plan of attack, assist with your resume, help you uncover opportunities, teach you how to perfect the art of networking, prep you for interviews, provide morale support along the way and act as your biggest coach and cheerleader.

The Deal
In exchange for the coaching, we’d like you to help us document your job-seeking process. This could include keeping a diary, being filmed in a few videos, other commentary – which would become content that we would share with other recent grads and students who are going through the same situation.

Who’s the Perfect Candidate?
We are looking for a recent grad who is very motivated to find a full-time professional job. You can be looking for a job in any field, but need to be based in or around Boston, so we can meet face-to-face occasionally.

Scottrade is Hiring 80-90 Interns

I just spoke with Caroline Dybala, Recruiting Manager at Scottrade. She provided me with some background on the 80-90 financial internships that they are hiring for in their branch offices. Scottrade has been growing at 15% per year and plans to open another 50 offices this year so these positions are key to the company’s growth.

Scottrade views its internship program as a feeder for its full-time positions, hiring 40-50% of its intern group each year. These are client-facing positions, so if you’ve got great customer service skills, an interest in the stock market (yes, it will go up again), and are gung-ho about learning, Scottrade could be the place for you.

On another totally unrelated note, we need to reach 1000 fans on our facebook page by the end of today to get a cool url, so please fan us on facebook now!

Job Tip: Be a contrarian when it comes to jobs and companies

In our recent Building Relationships survey, 91% of college students and grads told us that an employer’s brand was important to them. 42% said they prefer to apply to companies that they / their friends / their family had heard of before. That’s well and good, but everyone wants to work for Google, Goldman and GE so that means lots of competition chasing a limited number of jobs.

So be a contrarian when it comes to considering companies - go after the non-brand name companies, smaller local organizations. Why? (1) Fewer people will apply which means better chances for you (trust me, I see this all the time on experience.com, the lesser known companies get WAY FEWER applications) and (2) why not, sure you’d prefer to have a “brand name” on your resume, but the next best thing is to get good solid working experience, which these companies can readily provide. Maybe you’ll even latch onto the next Facebook or Twitter. PLus, It’s got to beat sitting on the couch all summer. Think about it.
